Privacy Policy

Superlingual (“we”, “us”) is a Chinese reading practice service for English speakers, operated from Australia. You can reach us at hello@superlingual.com.

Account information from sign-in. You can sign in with Google or Microsoft. We receive the name, email address, profile photo, and a provider account identifier that those services share with us. We use that to create or recognise your Superlingual account. We do not receive your Google or Microsoft password.

Information you give us. This can include a display alias, reading-level preference, display settings, revision lists, favourite readings, forum posts and replies, and reports you submit about forum content.

Pronunciation practice. If you use speaking practice, your device microphone records audio so we can score your pronunciation. That audio is sent to Microsoft Azure Speech for assessment. We store scores and the related characters or sentence text. We do not keep a copy of the recording on Superlingual’s servers.

Text you ask us to analyse. Signed-in features may send short passages you submit (for example for a word-by-word breakdown) to our translation provider.

Usage information. We record page views and similar activity, including the path you visited, a random visitor identifier stored on your device, referrer, timezone, language, approximate country, device and browser type, and — if you are signed in — your Superlingual user id. We use this to understand how the service is used and to keep it reliable.

When you choose “Continue with Google”, Superlingual requests basic profile information (name, email address, and profile photo) so we can sign you in and show your account on the site and in the iOS app.

• We use this data only to authenticate you and operate your Superlingual account.
• We do not sell Google user data or use it for advertising.
• We do not share Google user data with third parties except as needed to run the service (for example our database host) or if the law requires it.

• Save learning progress, preferences, favourites, and revision lists across devices
• Show your name, alias, and photo on forum posts you make
• Provide pronunciation scoring and translation features you choose to use
• Moderate the forum, investigate abuse, and operate the service

• Contact you about your account if needed

We do not sell your personal information. We share it with service providers who help us run Superlingual, only as needed for that work:

• Google — sign-in (if you use Google) and cloud hosting / file storage
• Microsoft — sign-in (if you use Microsoft) and Azure Speech for pronunciation
• MongoDB — storing account, learning, forum, and analytics data
• OpenRouter (and the AI model it routes to, currently an Anthropic Claude model) — optional translation / sentence analysis

Forum posts, including the name or alias and photo you publish with them, are visible to other visitors. We may also disclose information if we believe it is required by law, to protect Superlingual or other people, or in connection with a transfer of the service.

We use a session cookie to keep you signed in. Your browser also stores a random visitor identifier in local storage so we can tell repeat visits apart from new ones. These are needed for the service to work as designed. You can sign out at any time, and you can clear cookies and local storage in your browser or device settings.

We keep account and learning data for as long as your account exists. Usage records are kept to operate and improve the service. Forum posts remain until you or we remove them. If you ask us to delete your account, we will delete or de-identify personal information we hold about you, except where we need to keep something (for example a legal obligation, or forum content we must retain to keep threads coherent — in that case we may replace your name with a generic label).

• You can use much of the reading catalogue without signing in.
• You can update alias, display preferences, revision lists, and favourites in the app.
• You can disconnect Google or Microsoft access from that provider’s account settings.
• To access, correct, or delete your account data, email hello@superlingual.com from the address on your account. We will respond within a reasonable time.

If you are in Australia, you also have rights under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). If you are in the UK, EEA, or a similar jurisdiction, you may have additional rights (access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, and portability). You can complain to your local privacy regulator if you are not satisfied with how we handle a request.

Superlingual is a general language-learning service. It is not directed at children under 13. If you are under 13, please do not create an account. If you believe we have collected personal information from a child under 13, contact us and we will delete it.

We operate from Australia. The service is hosted on cloud infrastructure that may process data in Australia, Singapore, the United States, and other countries where our providers run. Sign-in, speech, and translation providers process data under their own terms and locations as well.

We use HTTPS, httpOnly session cookies, and access controls on administrative tools. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of Superlingual after an update means you accept the revised policy.
